George is my savior, I shall not want

On June 16th, My 29th birthday.
Tragedy struck my little musical world when
a cab driver peeled away with my guitar in the trunk of his car.

I went into a state of shock, something of a paralysis, really.
K and I spent days calling every lost and found, every cab company and anyone with any suggestions as to what we could do.

Unfortunately, my guitar, black swan has gone away, hopefully to a home where she will be loved and appreciated.

In an amazing turn of events, I have been given an extraordinary gift.
Hearing of my loss, a man by the name of George Lee bought me a new guitar.
I had a hard time accepting this gift at first, but after some convincing on George's part, I gave in. It amazes me how kind people can be, how giving.

I now have a beautiful new guitar very appropriately named George.
After a month of not being able to play I have been playing until my
fingers ache on a daily basis and it's the sweetest pain ever.

Thank You George. You have given me a second chance. I promise I will make beautiful music with your namesake.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much to everyone who has been requesting Fishnet Sailor.

A very special thanks goes out to Mr. Carpentier.

"Your heart's like a whale
and you're built like a tank.
You keep me alive, and I'd like to thank you.
cuz there were times I couldn't make it through my day
when I lost my shit and they should have carted me away,
but you're always there, you care and you believe in what I do.
I wanna go through the soccer field to the swingsets, just me and you.

Let's swing high.
Let's swing high
Let's swing high
so high we touch the sky."

-excerpt from the song, Mr. Carpentier (coming soon...)

Funneling My Frustration For a Better Tomorrow

Thank you Mister S. for the very sweet email and phone call born out of concern for my well-being after my last blog post.

I got a fairly good night of sleep last night and feel a little less frustrated with the world. From time to time, it does bog me down, and I vent. I start this day with a renewed sense of purpose from a calmer more centered place, a bit closer to temporary emotional stability.
At times, that's the best we can hope for.

I am channeling my frustration and nervous energy into the new album, the new video and into a couple of other little projects that are happy funtime surprises for you all.

Yay!

Connecticut and other Near Death Experiences

Saturday I did a show in Connecticut at a sweet little space called Jitters. I addictively sipped peppermint tea throughout the night and did two sets followed by a third short set. If you notice on the setlist, I played flapjacks twice, breaking a sacred rule of not repeating the same song in the same venue on the same night. However, to defend myself, Flapjacks was such a big hit with the people of Jitters...and when people start throwing their panties and screaming for flapjacks, I heat up the griddle like any good cook in the kitchen. It was also the owner of the venue, a sweet woman named Shirley who requested the song. Now how could I refuse? Thank You Shirley for having us. Thank you, Mr. Carpentier for driving me to the show and as always for being the best friend I could ever ask for.

I tip the biggest of hats To Mr McWiggens Chesteraurther III(Chris) for coming all the way down from Vermont to do the pyrotechnics(sound). Once again, to the woman in the red dress. I am really sorry for setting your poodle on fire during the Acoustic Black Sabath tribute.

After the show, we decided to drop by a local bar for a post performance drink. Though the loud hiphop and unfriendly stares initially had me on edge, I thought I would try to just blend in and relax as best I could. I am very white, by the way. I'm like one step away from being an albino.

I hadn't even taken 3 sips when a bar brawl broke out. You know it's bad news when there is a girl on her back on the floor and there are fists flying. I thought people were going to pull out guns. The fight kept shifting around the bar so that we couldn't find a clear path to the exit. I wondered if this was really it? "Oh Jesus, please please please. don't let them pop a cap in my ass."
Would I die in Connecticut? Luckily, we were able to escape.

It is rather funny that people perceive New York as being a dangerous place. The perception of Connecticut is that of someplace more wooded and quiet with chirping birds and cute little farms. Oh Connecticut, with your underbelly of violence, I applaud you for flashing my life before my eyes. Who knew I would one day breath easy arriving in the safety of Brooklyn?

Big Love for brooklynheightsradio.com
Stuart Metric, the founder, has been a big support for a few years now.
I've done a few live performances that have aired on the station and
The Walking song is in regular rotation on their site.

Scene404.com did an interview for their podcast just before christmas and has kept it prominently featured on their site ever since.

Thank You to Scene404 founder, Ryan, for all the support and encouragement. You can go to scene404 to listen to the podcast, but I also recommend exploring the site. It has a great philosophy which I whole-heartedly support. Also, their mascot Julian is totally dorky cute and I can be seen from time to time sporting a t-shirt with his likeness.

Also special thanks to out of the blue and 64events for championing my music.

I feel the love.
please note that this is not all-inclusive. I can only thank so many people and sites all at once. There is more love, just waiting to go around.

A note from Kim Levering

Kim Levering, Robert German, Julia Carl (taken at the Abbey in LA)
Valentine's Day 06

Have you ever had a friend that you didn't know that you had? Because you took advantage of a connection simply because the signal was so strong? I have... But these situations, real and otherwise, fantasy and what we want our realities to be, have shown me several things. I look forward and I can give no answers... I speculate. I speculate on cue. And it's the people that understand that fact, the ones who don't expect answers either, that you look to for conversation. Reason being? No answer is scripted. No future is planned. No outcome is what we want. And I respect this is in all of my closest friends. Now... I... can... Escape... with the best of them. Like I'm doing right now. But the sincerity of which I represent myself is this particular moment... and in it... I have a good friend. I am, at the very bottom line, so happy with that. I can say... that this is true... and nothing right now clouds my thinking other than this. Laugh.. go ahead. Cheesey yes... yes it is. Real to me. What about you right now? I'm happy and pleased with the genious who came up with the idea of cliche... because that's basically a snap shot right? Well... here's my snap shot, my cliche. And it probably doesn't mean that much because I have a head full of crazy... and tomorrow I'll look back at this and I'll laugh, and pretend that in this moment it wasn't real. But the cliche that I WAS speaking of is this... All we have is this moment... The future is a step forward, the past, a step behind... and sometimes can't see where I am. I feel fortunate that people, the ones, who see the direction in which I am going, in which they are going, can point out the obvious. And that doesn't happen all that often. This is what I'm thankful for... Robert is one of those people who just simply gets it. And for that, I'm grateful to even have the good fortune of meeting him. Stars align and stuff... blah.. Blah... blah. You'd want to know this guy too. Simply on the same page. Too much the same. Too recognizable. Too cool...

-A NOTE FROM ROBERT-

I met Kim Levering at a place called the Gowanus Lounge. It is the first place where I was able to pluck up the courage to get on stage and sing songs that I had written. I saw her sitting there, attentive, smiling. Her brother, Rich was bartending, or rather smoking a joint in the basement while poor Matt Katz, a fellow musician was teaching himself to mix drinks, quite unsure of where to put the money the customers were shoving at him... in fact quite unsure of what to charge for the drinks he was poorly concocting.

The Gowanus' open mic became a bit like a home to me and Kim and I grew to be good friends. She is a blessing to my life like many others who have graced me with their time and their beauty.

Had it not been for the encouragement of her and others I would not have gone from tentatively plucking my strings to confidently writing and playing what I feel. I am nothing without my friends. They are the ones who catch me when I fall and hug me when I succeed.

I believe that life, though sometimes strange and complicated, has a rhyme and it has a reason. People enter our lives for a purpose. We are given gifts in mysterious packaging. I appreciate all of the things that I am given. If I have 2 pennies in my pocket and nothing in the bank, I am still wealthy beyond what I could ever hope for.

I had previously blogged that there is a razor thin line that separates me from the homeless man. My friend Chris immediately emailed me to make me realize that the razor thin line I speak of stretches across this country like the great wall of china. You can see it from outer space. I have beautiful souls to catch me when I fall. I dedicate my music to these amazing individuals who stoke the fires of my soul.
